At the turn of the new year, a 19 year-old Nigerian international student "Zigi" Afolabi Stephen Opaso was murdered by Winnipeg Police Department. In 5 months, WPD has murdered 5 people, and no doubt these aggressions will only serve to increase the city's police budget. I originally meant for the use of this blog to be for documenting art process and growth and learning, but I am finding a bigger and bigger need to have a place for documenting information that is readily available to share when I need to, and somewhere away from suppressive centralized social media HELL. I know it is very unlikely this will make it into the hands of the wider public, but this type of documentation and archiving is just for me. I hope documenting knowledge, which is at risk of disappearing at the whims of greedy decision makers, will also serve future efforts as well!
In response to these acts of brutality, there has been talk of introducing body cams to WPD as a solution to police brutality. This solution is acceptable to liberals who presume that with body cams, there will be a standard of transparency and accountabilty. It assumes that evidence gained, will be used in a just and fair manner, and it assumes that technology is neutral party. wip.
